Tow s s tarting
•
For technical reasons tow starting a
vehicle with an automatic gearbox is not
possible.
The f f ollowing p p oints m m ust b b e n n oted
by t t he d d river o o f t t he v v ehicle b b eing
towed:
•
Before moving off, engage 2nd or 3rd
gear, depress and hold clutch.
•
Switch ignition on.
•
Once both vehicles are moving, release
the clutch.
•
As soon as engine starts, depress
clutch and move gear lever into neutral to
avoid running into the towing vehicle.
•
On v v ehicles w w ith a a c c atalytic c c onverter
the e e ngine m m ust n n ot b b e s s tarted b b y t t owing
the v v ehicle i i n e e xcess o o f 5 5 0 m m a a s u u nburnt
fuel c c an p p ass i i nto t t he c c onverter a a nd
cause d d amage.

TIPS AND MAINTENANCE
Towing
When t t owing vehicles with an auto-
matic g g earbox, the following points must
be noted in addition to the details on the
previous page:
•
Selector lever at "N".
•
Do not have the vehicle towed faster
than 30 mph (50 km/h).
•
Do not tow further than 30 miles (50 kilo-
metres).
If the vehicle has to be towed long dis-
tances it must be lifted at the front.
Reason: When the engine is not running,
the gearbox oil pump is not working and
the gearbox is not adequately lubricated
for high speeds or long distances.

cle m m ay o o nly b b e s s uspended a a t t t he
front.
Reason: I I f g g iven a a r r ear s s uspended
tow, t t he d d rive s s hafts t t urn b b ackwards.
The p p lanetary g g ears i i n t t he a a utomatic
gearbox t t hen t t urn a a t s s uch h h igh
speeds t t hat t t he g g earbox w w ill b b e
severely d d amaged i i n a a s s hort t t ime.
