Turn the computer back on.

Turn the faxmodem on by pushing in the power
button on the front, as shown in the illustration
below.
The modem performs a brief self-test.
After the self-test, the front panel status lights or
LEDs show the faxmodem's current state. The MR
light should be on, which shows the faxmodem is
ready for use.
