5.13 Checking, cleaning the
spark plug

Danger of burning on hot engine!

Pull off the spark plug socket (1) (Fig. 40) and
l
unscrew the spark plug (2).

Check the spark plug visually and clean it if

necessary (Fig. 41).

Note
In case of excessive combustion residues, burned
off electrodes or torn insulator replace the spark
plug.
Caution
!
Make sure to use a spark plug with correct heat
value.

Check the electrode gap with a feeler gauge, if
l
necessary adjust the gap to 0,7 to 0,8 mm.
Screw the spark plug in by hand and tighten it
l
until it bottoms.

Note
A new spark plug needs to be tightened by anoth
1/2 turn after contact, so that the seal is com-
pressed. If an old spark plug is to be used again,
tighten it for another 1/8 - 1/4 turn after contact, in
order to compress the seal ring.
Tighten the spark plug.
l
Caution
!
The spark plug must be correctly tightened. An
incorrectly tightened spark plug can get very
hot and cause engine damage.
