SECTION 30 – INSULATION
Welding anything to the shell may pen-
etrate the shell and could jeopardize the
integrity of the chiller. Any welding to
the chiller shell will result in void ing the
unit warranty.

OTHER INSULATION GUIDELINES

Only use removable insulation on movable parts,
valves thermowells, sight glass view areas, flanges and
pipe connections, and water boxes covers and bolts.
These areas must be accessible for service and occa-
sionally by operating personnel. NEVER cover sight
glass areas. Re fer to the insulation drawings located in
Appendix C - Insulation Illustrations of this document.
NEVER cover pump motors with in su la tion. Pumps
must be allowed to radiate some of the heat generated
to the surrounding air. NEVER use weld pins for at-
taching insulation to the chiller - doing so will void
the factory warranty. NEVER insulate over electrical
86
wiring, the heat generated within the unit will melt the
insulation on the wiring. Water boxes or cover plates
must be removed or opened from time-to-time for tube
clean ing. Valves, pumps and nozzles must be acces-
sible for servicing and operation. Insulate auxiliary and
instrument piping by wrapping glass wool around it.

ADDITIONAL COMMENTS

Before installing insulation, the unit should be placed in
its permanent position, leveled, checked to make sure
it is air tight, and commissioned. Insulation should be
sched uled last. Johnson Controls will not be respon-
sible for costs incurred to remove insulation to leak
check unit if in su la tion was installed before com-
missioning.
The insulation drawings in Appendix C - Insulation
Illustrations of this document are meant to serve as
a guide for the insulation con trac tor before the chiller
arrives on the jobsite for cost es ti ma tion and for actual
installation.
Never use weld pins to attach insulation
to the chiller. Doing so will void the fac-
tory warranty!
