SECTION 8 – RUPTURE DISK PIPING INSTALLATION
The ParaFlow
Chiller/Heater will arrive at the
TM
jobsite with a fac to ry installed metallic rupture disk.
The rup ture disk is stainless steel and has a burst rat-
ing of 12.0 PSIG +/- 2.0 PSI. This will protect the
unit should there ever be a tube rupture, or in the very
unlikely event that the unit's re frig er ant va por pressure
gets too high. Un like vapor com pres sion cool ing ma-
chines that will re lieve refrigerant vapor, if the rupture
disk bursts, ab sorp tion machines could expel a liquid.
Liquid coming out of the rupture disk
could be in excess of 300°F. Al ways run
vent piping to a floor drain away from
high traffic areas.
The disk is mount ed be tween two spe cial flanges
which have been painstakingly checked at the factory
for leaks. Do not loos en the bolts around the flange
nor re move the rupture disk for any rea son! The
outer flange of the disk has a sched ule 80 CPVC pipe
stub sup plied at the factory for the installer to con nect
to. (See rupture disk photo in Figure 11 on page 29.)
YORK rec om mends us ing CPCV or Fiberglass ma-
te ri als for the rup ture disk vent piping, unless this is
pro hib it ed by local codes. The rup ture disk vent pip-
ing must be at least the same diameter as the rupture

disk itself. Never run the rupture disk vent piping at
a higher el e va tion than the rupture disk – doing so will im-
pose an un de sir able stat ic head back-pres sure, which
the unit must first over come before re liev ing the in ter nal
pressure within the unit. Run the rup ture disk vent pip-
ing over to a floor drain and ter mi nate about 10 - 12
inch es above the drain, as shown in Figure 11 on page
29.
Adequate piping supports must be used on the rupture
disk vent piping to elim i nate all forces and stresses to
the disk and flange. These forces could cause prema-
ture disk failure or cause the absorption unit to leak in
this area.
Due to the high temperatures of an absorption unit dur-
ing operation, and the expansion and contraction as so-
ci at ed with this, the rup ture disk vent pip ing must have
a flex i ble con nec tion coming off the fac to ry sup plied
CPVC stub, as shown in Figure 11 on page 29. The
flexible connection must be field supplied by others.
If the installation is for two or more units, DO NOT
merge the rupture disk piping from the units into a
common line. Each absorption unit must have its own
individual rup ture disk line. However, a common floor
drain could be used for more than one absorption unit.
