HI8711 allows the selection of two set points with two independent outputs for acid and alkaline
dosages.
• Auto-diagnostics to verify offset and slope calibration and electrode contamination/deterioration
• Fail Safe Alarm System protects against problems caused by power supply failure or signal
interruption
• Selectable manual ON, OFF and automatic dosing control for alkaline and acid dosing with
indicator.
Fail Safe Alarm System
• Hanna's exclusive Fail Safe Alarm System protects against problems caused by power supply
failure or signal interruption, which are typical risks in industrial environments. An alarm
condition is indicated by a red LED, located directly on the front panel of the controller.
Self-Diagnostic Test
• Built-in autodiagnostic functions enable the user to check and troubleshoot any malfunctions.
The functions are made via front panel keys to isolate the cause of malfunction whether it is due
to pH electrode contamination, internal offset circuit or the amplifier circuit.
Overtime Dosing Protection
• The HI8711 incorporates adjustable overtime dosing protection from 5 to 60 minutes. If dosing
exceeds selected time, the alarm will be triggered and the dosing contact will deactivate. This
feature can be activated or deactivated.
Matching Pin Connection
• Supports potential matching pin connection to avoid typical problems caused by grounding loop
current, such as progressive damage of the electrode, fluctuating measurements, and poor
process regulation.
Output and Input Connections
• Each model accepts either a direct input from a pH or ORP electrode or from a transmitter
through 4-20 mA input. The instrument also provides ±5V power output and input terminals for
amplified electrodes. Moreover, you can choose the output configuration for connecting a
recorder or a PLC, between 0-20 or 4-20 mA.
Robust Design
• A removable, transparent splash-proof cover protects the front panel.

OPERATIONAL GUIDE The setting of the various keys are made via the front panel keys and trimmers. When each key is pressed the LED is lighted indi- cating to the user that the function is in operation. Make sure that the pH or the ORP meter with the electrode is calibrated before operat- ing the instruments (see page 40-42).

pH CALIBRATION Make sure you are in the mea- surement mode (MEASURE SURE COARSE LED light is on) and not in the FINE set mode before proceeding the calibration (not for HI 8510). Note the temperature of the buffer with a ChecktempC or a glass thermometer.
  • Page 45 Note: to get accurate readings, use pH 4.01 if you are going to measure acid samples or pH 10.01 for alkaline mea- surements. Shake briefly and wait one minute before adjusting the slope trimmer to display pH 4.01 (or 10.01) on the LCD if the temperature of the buffer solution is at 25°C, if not refer to the chart on page 43 for appropriate buffer value for the corresponding temperature.

  • Page 51: Taking Redox Measurements

TAKING REDOX MEASUREMENTS Redox measurements allow the quantifica- tion of the oxidizing or reducing power of a solution, and are commonly expressed in Oxidation may be defined as the process during which a molecule (or an ion) loses electrons and reduction as the process by which electrons are gained.
  • Page 52 To make correct redox measurements the following conditions must prevail: The surface of the electrode must be cleaned and smooth. The surface of the electrode must un- dergo a preventive treatment depending on the solution to be measured has oxidizing or reductive characteristics. Because the Pt/PtO system depends on the pH, the pretreatment of the electrode may be determined by the pH and the redox potential...
