2-1. Thermal Head

When this unit is carried in for service maintenance due to
white stripes, the trouble is not the defect of a thermal
head, but it may be caused by the adhesion of dust.
Therefore, printing must be checked before replacement of
a thermal head. When a thermal head must be replaced
because it is defective, print a test pattern (16 STEP) as the
reference of the density so as to adjust density after
replacement.
n
Be sure to use UPC-R206 as media.
Procedure before replacement
1. Check that the power of this unit is turned off.
2. Wipe the surface of the thermal head carefully with
soft cloth moistened with alcohol.
3. Turn on the power while pressing and holding the ←
and → keys simultaneously.
The service mode is started.
n
Press the ← and → keys continuously until "S" is
displayed in the upper-right position of the LCD
screen.
4. Install media (UPC-R206) in this unit.
5. Press the MENU key when "READY" is displayed on
the LCD screen.
6. Select "<PRINT>" using ← and → keys.
7. Select "16 STEP" using ↑ and ↓ keys.
8. Press the EXEC key and print a test pattern (16 STEP).
m
. It takes time to start printing because preheating is
done before printing until the temperature of a
thermal head reaches a proper temperature.
. Keep the printed test pattern because it is used as
reference during comparison of density.
9. Check the print result and check that the trouble
indicated by the user occurs.
10. Turn off the power of this unit.
11. Replace the thermal head. (Refer to Section 1-6-17.)

Adjustment for Parts Replacement

Procedure after replacement
1. Print a test pattern (16 STEP) with reference to steps 3
to 8 of "Procedure before replacement".
2. Check the irregular density.
Perform "Thermal Head Position Adjustment" (Sec-
tion 2-3-1) as required, adjust the thermal head
position, and print a test pattern (16 STEP) again.
3. Compare the density of the printed test pattern with
that of the test pattern printed in step 8 of "Procedure
before replacement".
Perform the following procedure when the print
density differs.
(1) Press the MENU key.
(2) Press the ← and → keys and select "<SETUP>".
(3) Select "HEAD VOLTAGE" using ↑ and ↓ keys.
(4) Adjust the voltage of a thermal head using ← and
→ keys.
(5) Press the EXEC key and print a test pattern.
Repeat steps (1) to (5) until a proper density is
obtained.
4. Check the drag lines
(1) Press the MENU key. Press the MENU key when
"READY" is displayed on the LCD screen.
(2) Press the ← and → keys and select "<PRINT>".
(3) Press the ↑ and ↓ keys and select "RAMP".
(4) Press the EXEC key and print a test pattern
(RAMP).
When drag lines appear, perform "Thermal Head
Position Adjustment" (Section 2-1-1) and adjust the
thermal head position. After that, return to step 1,
print a test pattern (16 STEP) again, and check the
irregular density.
5. Reset the number of accumulated print sheets in a
thermal head.
(1) Press the MENU key. Press the MENU key when
"READY" is displayed on the LCD screen.
(2) When "INFORMATION" is displayed, press the ↑
and ↓ keys and select "HEAD PRINTS".
