Technical instruction EC 2000

General information for using the EC 2000
Two different electrode types can be connec-
ted to the EC 2000. Measurements using a
platinum electrode can be made in either
water, liquid fertilizer or basis solutions be-
cause of the electrode's wide measurement
range from 0 to 200 mS/cm. The carbon elec-
trode should only be used for measurements
in water or fertilizer solu-tions and has a
measurement range from 0 to 20 mS/cm.
You can switch between the platinum and
carbon electrodes by simultaneously pres-
sing on the CAL and TEMP buttons. The new
electrode type is then briefly displayed: «C»
for the carbon electrode or «Pt» for the pla-
tinum electrode. A recalibration should then
be made using the new electrode.
Starting up the EC 2000 for the first time
Open the cover on the rear side of the de-
vice and insert a 9-volt battery. Put the cover
back on. Connect the LF electrode to the EC
2000. Turn on the device by briefly pressing
the ON/OFF button.
The electrode type («C» for coal or «Pt» for
platinum) briefly appears in the display af-
ter the device is turned on. The calibration
concentration of the most recent calibration
is also displayed. The current temperature-
compensated measured value in mS/cm is
then automatically displayed.
In order to take a measurement, the conduc-
tive electrode should be submerged at least
4 cm. into the solution that you are measuring
and then moved gently through this solution.
The measured value can then be read as
soon as the display has stabilized.
The temperature is displayed when you
press the TEMP button. After this button is
released, the current con-ductivity value is
displayed once again. The temperature and
value displays blink whenever the tempe-
rature is not in the permissible temperature
range of 5 – 40°C.
The device shuts off automatically if no but-
ton is pressed with ten minutes. In order to
deactivate the automatic shut-off feature,
you can press the ON/OFF button for about
five seconds while the device is turned on.
The display will briefly show «A0». The auto-
matic shut-off feature is reactivated whene-
ver the device is restarted.
Note: The EC 2000 is equipped with a battery
voltage controller which checks the battery
status when the device is turned on.
Replace the battery if «LO BAT» is shown
on the display. The device may make false
measurements if the battery is not replaced.
Calibrating the EC 2000
The 0 – 20 mS/cm range is intended for wa-
ter and liquid fertilizer measurements. The
20–200 mS/cm range is only relevant when
working with basis solutions. Depending on
which range you are measuring in, you can
cali-brate with 1.41 / 12.88 or 111.8 mS/cm.
The device can be adjusted using a single-
point calibration. Press the CAL button to
enter calibration mode. The LED will light up
to indicate the mode change. In order to cali-
brate, the electrode should be submerged at
least 4 cm. into the calibration solution and
then moved gently through the solution. The
current measured value is displayed during
the calibration. The device automatically
detects which calibration solution has been
selected. Once the measured value has sta-
bilized, the calibration data is applied and the
LED goes out.
The calibration will be automatically aborted
sixty seconds after the start of calibration
in the event that the measurement signals
are not within a specific range. The display
will show the message «Err». You should ac-
knowledge this error message by pressing
the CAL button. An aborted calibration can
be caused by a contami-nated or defective
electrode or by a contaminated or incorrect
calibration solution.
You can leave the calibration mode at any
time by pressing the CAL button again.
