Technical instruction PET 2000

Operation of the activity meter PET 2000
General points
Plants grow in the best way possible when
a balanced supply of nutrients in the soil is
available. They use their roots to take up the
chemically efficient concentration of ions,
which is also called ion activity.
The activity meter PET 2000 measures the
chemical efficiency of the dissolved nutri-
tious salts in the soil.
The activity measurement is done using the
AM probe, which is inserted into the soil, and
the PET 2000 activity meter.
The principle behind this way of taking
measurements is as follows: a continuous
electrical current is induced to the soil via
the two electrodes on the tip of the AM
probe; the conductance is measured using
the activity meter PET 2000. The conductivity
determined in this way serves as an indicator
of the total activity of dissolved ions, i.e. nu-
trients, in the soil.
Operation of the meter
Insert a 9 V battery. To do so, lift the cover of
the battery compartment on the back of the
meter by pushing the cover away from the
clip connector: insert the battery and close
the compartment with the cover.
How to take a measurement
First, polish the tip of the AM probe using
pulp; after an extended use, polish it with fine
sandpaper thus removing corrosion layers
which have developed. Connect the AM pro-
be via the plug at the meter; when pressing
the push button, the display will show the va-
lue 0.00 and the LED will glow red. When the
voltage of the battery diminishes, the display
will show "Lo Bat" and the battery has to be
replaced.
To carry out an activity measurement, insert
AM probe into the moist soil or into a subs-
tratum and press the push button. On the dis-
play, you will see the measured value in g/l.
The LED will continue to glow red up to a va-
lue of 0.2 g/l. The red LED will go out in the
optimum activity range of > 0.2 g/l to >1.0 g/l.
In concentrated saline solutions of >1.0 g/l,
the red LED will flicker constantly.

Press and hold the push button on the me-
ter only so long until a constant value is
measured. If you hold it too long (several mi-
nutes), polarisation effects will take place at
the electrodes and the value measured will
change.
More Information see 4.1.
Note: The PET 2000 is equipped with a battery
voltage controller which checks the battery
status when the device is turned on.
Replace the battery if «LO BAT» is shown
on the display. The device may make false
measurements if the battery is not replaced.
