Laying of copper cable
Data transfer in PROFIBUS systems is based on an interference-immune symmetrical bus system to
the RS 485 specification using shielded twisted pair cable. With correct system installation, small
external sources of interference are led to ground through the cable shield without causing interference in the
data lines. Interference of this type can largely be avoided with appropriate EMC measures such as EMC-
compliant system installation, EMC-compliant cable laying and measures that avoid large ground
potential differences.
Electromagnetic interference from sources such as switching processes, rectifiers and circuit breakers
can cause equipment faults to occur. In addition, overvoltage and lightning strikes can destroy
electronic components in fieldbus devices. Correct operation of the plant can then no longer be
guaranteed.
Particularly for equipment containing frequency inverters (variable speed drives), the manufacturer's
regulations for EMC compliance must be observed for the following components:
Filters,
Chokes, and
