Base Names
Assigning base names is the easiest way to label your files. A base
name is a sequence of one to eight characters. Listed below are a
few examples:
ACCTS
GAME
CLIENTS
LETTER
POKER
PRICES
Just by looking at these base names, you can probably guess at the
type of information stored in each file.
Extensions
Extensions can be used to simplify the organization of your files. An
extension is a sequence of one to three characters that are added at
the end of a base name. A period is used to separate a base name
from its extension. Listed below are some examples of base names
followed by extensions.
ACCTS. '83
LETTER. # 1
ACCTS. '84
LETTER.#2
GAME. PAC
POKER.BAS
GAME.ZAP
POKER.ASM
CLIENTS. 1-4 PRICES .GDS
CLIENTS.5-9
PRICES. SVC
You can see from these examples that more than one file can be
assigned the same base name so long as each has its own unique
extension. You do not have to think up unique base names for all of
your account files. For example, you could assign all of them a base
name such as ACCTS and then differentiate between them by adding
extensions that designate the year in which each was made.
