EXPLANATION: The FORMAT command is used
t o
set up
the directory, tracks, and sectors on a disk (see Appendix D tor
information
o n
directories. tracks. and sectors).
NOTE
THE FORMAT COMMAND IS USED TO FORMAT
BOTH THE
FIXED
DISK
DRIVE
AND
INDIVIDUAL DISKETTES. THIS SECTION
DEALS ONLY WITH THE FORMATTING OF
DISKETTES. REFER TO CHAPTER I AND TO
THE DISK OPERATING SYSTEM MANUAL
FOR INFORMATION ON FORMATTING THE
FIXED DISK DRIVE.
Formatting
must
be done before tiles can be stored on a diskette.
Normally, a diskette will be formatted only once
~
when
it
is
brand new. When a diskette is formatted, all files stored
o n it
are destroyed. This could be useful if you wished to clear a
diskette of all files and start again with
a
blank, formatted dis-
kette. Obviously, however, you would not want t o forinat a
diskette on which you had stored valuable files (especially if
you did not have backup copies of those files).
It i \ po\\ible to a\aign a namc to a di\kcttc at the time you
fomiat
i t . If
you do thi\, the diskette name will appear
o n
your
monitor m e e n when you use the DIRECTORY command to
diqday the content\ of the di5kette.
