Preparing the Site

2.2.1

What You Will Need

For trouble-free installation of the SDM-8400 hardware make sure you have the following
on hand:

• The SDM-8400 base unit, with all cables and accessories you received in the
product package. Refer to
• At least one of the following configuration and management access devices:
- A console terminal (TTY terminal or a PC equipped with terminal emulation
software) for direct or dial-up connection to the console port at the rear of the
SDM-8400 unit, or
- A TELNET network device accessed through IP connectivity over LAN/
WAN.
When you first take the SDM-8400 out of the box, the only configuration

device you can use is the console terminal, since the unit does not yet have an
IP address. For details, see
• A sufficient number and length of cables for all ports.
- One straight through 10/100BaseT LAN cable, RJ-45M to RJ-45M, for each
Ethernet port
- Custom-made HD-26 cables for the serial ports, using V.35/V.11, X.21, X.21
EU (with metric screw on DB-15 connector), TIA-232 (V.24), TIA-449 (V.36)
or TIA-530.
These cables are not provided with the SDM-8400 product package.

• The user equipment that will be directly connected to the serial port, along with
the appropriate custom HD-26 cable. Details are provided in
