Installing the Model 024, ESLL, or ESLS storage enclosure

Learn how to install an IBM Elastic Storage Server Storage Expansion (024) (5147-024 storage enclosure),
IBM EXP12SX SAS Storage Enclosure (ESLL storage enclosure), or IBM EXP24SX SAS Storage Enclosure
(ESLS storage enclosure) into a rack and learn how to cable it to a system or to an adapter in a system or
an expansion unit.
Installing a storage enclosure into a rack is a customer task. You can complete this task yourself, or
contact a service provider to complete the task for you. You might be charged a fee by the service
provider for this service.
Complete the following tasks to install the 5147-024, ESLL, or ESLS storage enclosure:
v Preparing to install the 5147-024, ESLL, or ESLS storage enclosure
v Completing inventory
v Determining and marking the location in the rack
v Installing support rails into the rack
v Installing the enclosure into the rack
v Optional: Installing disk drives or SSDs
v Connecting the enclosure to your server
v Connecting cables, power cords, and installing covers
v Completing the installation

Preparing to install the 5147-024, ESLL, or ESLS storage enclosure

Learn about the prerequisites for installing the 5147-024, ESLL, or ESLS storage enclosure and determine
whether you can install the enclosure concurrently.
To prepare to set up an enclosure, complete the following steps:
1. Determine the level of software that you need to support the enclosure. For instructions, see the IBM
Prerequisite website (http://www-912.ibm.com/e_dir/eServerPrereq.nsf).
2. Determine whether you can add your enclosure concurrently by reviewing the following information.
You can add your enclosure concurrently (with the system powered on and partitions active) if you
have one of the following configurations:
v Your system is managed by an IBM Hardware Management Console (HMC).
v Your system is not managed by an HMC, but has only one partition, and that partition is running
the IBM i operating system.
Note: If you do not have one of these configurations, you must power off the system to add
enclosures.
3. Choose one of the following options:
v If your 5147-024, ESLL, or ESLS storage enclosure arrived to your site preinstalled in a rack,
continue with step 4.
v If your 5147-024, ESLL, or ESLS storage enclosure needs to be installed into a rack, continue with
step 5 on page 2.
4. If your 5147-024, ESLL, or ESLS storage enclosure arrived to your site preinstalled in a rack, continue
with one of the following procedures:
v If you want to install disk drives or solid-state drives (SSDs), continue with "Optional: Install disk
drives or SSDs in the 5147-024, ESLL, or ESLS storage enclosure" on page 9.
