is received.
Note: It is not recommended to use mismatched PSUs in a 5147-102 enclosure.

Miscellaneous equipment specification (MES) instructions

An IBM Elastic Storage System 5147-102 Storage Enclosure hardware change can be done by using the
MES instructions.
Upgrading an IBM Elastic Storage System 5147-102 Storage Enclosure from
a half-populated to a fully populated configuration
This non-concurrent MES procedure involves shifting down customer workload, adding 50 more HDDs
to an existing IBM Elastic Storage System 5147-102 Storage Enclosure to fill up all 102 drive slots with
HDDs, and returning the system to the customer for configuration of the new storage.
This procedure is only applicable to an IBM Elastic Storage System solution with a single half-populated
IBM Elastic Storage System 5147-102 Storage Enclosure.
MES upgrade steps
Refer to the following steps to upgrade an 5147-102 from a half-populated to a fully populated
configuration:
1. Customer task: Stop using the ESS 5147-102 enclosure.
2. Customer task: Unmount affected file systems that are mounted on the ESS 5147-102 enclosure and
shutdown GPFS.
mmshutdown -a
3. Identify the ESS 5147-102 storage enclosure to be upgraded.
a. Perform the following checks in the essutils menu and gather ESS 5147-102 serial number in
the SSR Checks for ESS 3500 nodes' section:
i) Quick storage configuration check
ii) Check enclosure cabling and paths to disks
b. SSR Checks for ESS 3500 nodes > 1. Quick storage configuration check.
