The enabling function is also described in EN 60204-1:2006 and corre‐
sponds to the state of the art.
The panic position on 3-stage enabling buttons was introduced because
limbs often become cramped when a person is in a state of shock and
as a result is not able to release the enabling button. For this reason,
firmly pushing down on the enabling button also leads to switch off.
The control must be designed in such a way that machine movement is
not initiated directly when the enabling button is activated, but only as a
result of the additional activation of a control button. This can be foil
keys on the hand-held terminal or graphical software buttons on the
touch screen.
The machine movement signal can be also triggered by an optionally
available joystick.
According to EN 60204, only stop categories 0 or 1 are allowed for the
enabling function, i.e. stopping the machine with the enabling button
must always be combined with switching off the power supply to the
drive mechanism.
In order to prevent incorrect, permanent activation of the enabling button
by mechanical fixing devices, it is recommended to limit the maximum
duration of an accepted enabling. This must be achieved by means of a
control located downstream to the hand-held terminal.
An enabling button is not a replacement for a two-hand control device,
which is specified for some machines (e.g. presses) and must therefore
not be confused!
In contrast to the enabling button, the two-hand control device forces the
endangered limbs of the operator into a safe position whilst the machine
is in motion.
The European Union obligates its member states to harmonise their statutory
provisions in respect of electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) by means of Di‐
rective 2004/108/EEC. In the following text this Directive is designated as
"EMC Directive".
