256 Driving and parking
ROAD SURFACE SCAN:
Monitors the road in front of the vehicle
R
using multifunction camera 1.
Is active when one of drive programs A
R
(Comfort) or N (CURVE) is selected.
Detects unevenness in the road surface, e.g.
R
bumps, before the vehicle drives over them.
Reduces chassis movements.
R
System limitations
ROAD SURFACE SCAN can be impaired in the
following situations or can stop functioning:
If the carriageway is insufficiently lit, e.g. at
R
night.
In snow, rain, fog, heavy spray, if there is
R
glare, in direct sunlight or in greatly varying
light conditions.
If the windscreen in the area of multifunction
R
camera
1
is dirty, misted up, damaged or
covered.
If the road surface has no optic structure or
R
reflects light.
If the distance to the vehicle in front is too
R
short.
If sections of the route have a very small
R
radius of curvature.
During dynamic driving manoeuvres, e.g. if
R
you accelerate or brake the vehicle sharply.
At speeds below 7 km/h or above
R
180 km/h.
If the vehicle is at a raised level or in drive
R
program C (Sport).
Observe the notes on cleaning the multifunction
camera (
page 475).
Setting the vehicle level
& WARNING Risk of accident because
vehicle level is too high
If you drive at a higher vehicle level, the driv‐
ing characteristics may be impaired due to
the higher vehicle centre of gravity.
The vehicle can drift outwards, for example,
when steering or cornering.
Always choose a vehicle level which is

suited to the driving style and the road
surface conditions.
& WARNING Risk of entrapment from vehi‐
cle lowering
When lowering the vehicle, other people
could become trapped if their limbs are
between the vehicle body and the tyres or
underneath the vehicle.
