CHASSIS SHEET METAL
ADJUSTMENT
12-13
at rear end of hood, as described in para-
graph
12-8.
1.
Loosen bolts A-B-C shown in figure 12-18.
2. With hood locked in place, rock the sheet
metal assembly until uniform spacing is ob-
tained between radiator grille and hood.
3. Adjust radiator mounting strap side
braces
D
for the best bolting condition, then
tighten bolts
B
to 10-15 ft. lbs. torque. NOTE:
Excessive tightening will distort the
1948
right
brace and strap at
B.
4. Install shims under side braces at points
E of sufficient thickness or quantity to main-
tain above alignment.
It
is essential to leave
'one shim under braces in all conditions.
5. Tighten bolts C securely, then tighten
bolt A to complete this adjustment.
Figure 12-19-Hood Spacing at Front Door and Cowl
12-8 HOOD SPACING AT FRONT
DOORS AND COWL
1.
The nominal spacing between rear edge
of hood and the front door and cowl is approxi-
mately
lis"
and should be reasonably uniform
from side to side. See figure 12-19. No adjust-
ment should be attempted to change spacing if
spacing is uniform and not objectionable in
appearance or operational function.
2. Before making any adjustment to correct
improper spacing between front edge of doors
and rear edge of hood, first make certain that
doors are centrally located in body door open-
ing, with uniform spacing along front edge.
Correction for any uneven condition should be
made by adjustment at door hinges.
3.
If
there is objectionable opening between
hood and edge of front door, correction should
be made in conjunction with alignment of the
radiator mounting strap as described in para-
graph 12-7. While bolts ABC (fig. 12-18) are
loose, also loosen the fender rear end support
to support bracket attaching bolts and fender
skirt to frame bolts on side of car to be ad-
justed. Move fender as required to give proper
spacing at door edge, then securely tighten
fender support attaching bolts, fender skirt to
frame bolts, and bolts A-B-C. In some cases on
1948 models, it may be necessary to loosen the
rocker panel to bracket attaching bolts when
making this adjustment. Care must be used
when making this adjustment not to encroach
too greatly on the hood to cowl clearance.
4.
If
the hood to cowl spacing is too narrow
or too wide but uniform from side to side,
minor correction may be made by "fore and
aft" adjustment of hood hinges, using care not
to throw nose of hood out of alignment with
radiator grille.
If
spacing is not uniform it may
be corrected by a slight lateral adjustment of
front or rear hood hinges provided this does
not adversely affect spacing along sides of hood
and fenders or alignment of hood nose with
fenders and grille. Where the side spacing
would be affected by lateral adjustment of
hinges, correction should be made by a forward
or rearward adjustment of a front fender as
described above. In making the latter adjust-
ment, consideration should be given to the
effect on the spacing between hood and front
doors, and fenders should be shifted forward
on the close side or rearward on the wide side
to obtain the best possible spacing at cowl
and doors.

points between the front fenders and fender
