IGNITION SYSTEM

cables are connected in accordance with num-
bers stamped on distributor cap at each ter-
minal. These terminals are numbered in a
counterclockwise direction according to engine
firing order
1-6-2-5-8-3-7-4.
8.
It
is very important to have the igni-
tion cables pushed all the way into terminals in
distributor cap and coil, and to have the cable
nipples pushed firmly over the terminals.
9. Check and set ignition timing as de-
scribed in paragraph
10-47.
10-52 IGNITION SWITCH AND LOCK
REPAIRS
a. Ignition Switch Key
If
ignition key sticks or feels rough as it is
inserted into the lock, examine it for burrs and
smooth up
with
a fine cut
file.
Blow finely
powdered graphite into lock cylinder, then work
key in and out of cylinder a number of times to
work graphite into
tumblers.
Do not use oil in
lock cylinder as this will cause tumblers to stick.
If
ignition switch key is lost and key code
number is not known, the code number will be
found stamped on the door safety lock, which
must be removed. A new key can be cut by us-
ing this code number.
b. Lock Cylinder Replacement
To remove lock
cylinder,
insert key and turn
ignition switch to "OFF"
position.
Insert a
stiff wire (paper clip) in small hole in face of
cylinder
(fig.
10-90, view A) to depress the pin
which locks the cylinder, turn cylinder
clock-
wise and pull out. To install lock cylinder insert
key, place cylinder in switch slightly clockwise
from "OFF" position, press inward and turn
cylinder counterclockwise.
c. Ignition Switch Replacement
1.
Disconnect ground cable from battery
to avoid a possible short circuit when discon-
necting wires from switch terminals.
2.
On
1948
models,
disconnect wire from
positive
(+)
terminal
of ignition coil and re-
move the switch extension from clips on push
rod cover and dash. Disconnect wires from the
exposed terminals on switch.
2a
.
On
1949
Series 50-70, remove shield
which is attached to flange of instrument panel
by two "theft-proof screws; these must be re-
moved with pliers since they cannot be removed
with a screw
driver.
Disconnect wires from
switch terminals.
3. Remove lock cylinder (subpar. b, above)
.
On
1948
models, remove switch from forward
side of instrument panel and pull extension
through dash. On
1949
Series 50-70, remove
two nuts and remove switch from forward side
of instrument panel.
4. The switch is serviced as a complete
as-
sembly and internal repairs should not be at-
tempted.
5. When
switch
is installed be careful to
connect wires to terminals as shown in the
chassis wiring circuit diagrams in Section 10-J.
Connect battery ground cable in proper manner
to make an initial winding of clock and set
clock. See Paragraph 10-66. On
1949
Series
50-70,
be sure to install switch terminal
shield
with new
"theft-proof" screws .
