M3 Sonar PHS Sonar Processor The Sonar Processor is the computer that controls the M3 Sonar PHS. It is a vital part of the M3 Sonar PHS Portable Hydrographic System (PHS). In this publication, the computer is referred to as the Sonar Processor.
The MRU is mounted in a lightweight subsea bottle, rated 10 metres. The MRU cable connects to the M3 Sonar Interface Unit to integrate with Seapath 130 GNSS sensor. The Motion Reference Unit is very sensitive to impacts. Be careful not to drop the MRU.

Cable (for use with the M3 Sonar Interface Unit) Operating manual The M3 Sonar PHS comes with only one Seapath sensor unit and Motion Reference Unit with the choice of either an MRU-3 or MRU-H. Operational software Operational software is provided on a suitable media. The operational software is installed on the Sonar Processor, and ready for use.

These items must be added to the M3 Sonar PHS for full operational functionality. The additional items can be provided by Kongsberg Mesotech. The Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) must have the capacity to independently maintain power to the M3 Sonar PHS for a minimum of 10 minutes. This ensures that the M3 Sonar PHS can be turned off in a controlled manner in the event of a power failure.
An overall installation procedure is provided below. Note In order to obtain maximum safety and M3 Sonar PHS performance, it is very important that the installation procedures in this manual are complied to. You must do the tasks in the order they are described.
Specific fasteners and consumables you will need for the M3 Sonar PHS installation are included in the supplied accessory kits. The following tools and items are required for the M3 Sonar PHS installation and are not included in the standard delivery. You must purchase these items locally.
Prerequisites • To install the M3 Sonar PHS, you must have basic mechanical skills. At least two people must do the installation together. • Install the Pole Mount on the vessel according to the USM Pole Mount manual (included on the USB flash drive).

Attaching the sensors to the M3 Sonar PHS flange Attach the M3 Sonar PHS flange to the Z-pole with four fasteners. Attach the Motion Reference Unit to the M3 Sonar PHS flange with four flat-head metric fasteners. Make sure that the MRU is correctly oriented with Connector A pointing towards the vessel bow.

Make sure that the Sonar Head connector is pointing toward the vessel bow (when deployed). Caution Be aware the Motion Reference Unit and the M3 Sonar Head are easily damaged through mishandling – in particular the polyurethane face of the Sonar Head transducer.

Installing the Seapath 130 sensor unit The M3 Sonar PHS Pole Mount comes with a custom mounting bracket for the Seapath 130 sensor unit, called the Seapath sensor flange. The Seapath 130 sensor unit is mounted onto this flange, which is attached to the top of the GPS Mast.

Installing the Seapath 130 sensor unit Procedure Lower the Pole Mount into a deployment position. Stabilize the Z-pole with a block and tackle set or by employing multiple people to hold the pole in place. Remove the hinge bracket (A) by unfastening the two long bolts and two short bolts securing the bracket in place.

M3 Sonar PHS Installation Manual Attach the Seapath sensor flange (A) onto the GPS Mast (B) with the four provided fasteners (1/2"-13 screws). Attach the GPS Mast to the Seapath 130 sensor unit. Place the Seapath 130 sensor unit upside down on the deck.

Installing the Seapath 130 sensor unit Attach the Seapath sensor mounting bracket (A) to the Seapath sensor flange (B) using the four provided fasteners (5/16"-18 screws with washers). Flip the GPS Mast assembly upside down and attach it onto the Seapath 130 sensor unit. Re-fasten the four bolts (!) attaching the mounting bracket to the sensor unit.

Installing the Sonar Processor Installing the Sonar Processor The Sonar Processor is the computer that controls the M3 Sonar PHS. It is a vital part of the M3 Portable Hydrographic System (PHS). Prerequisites A suitable location for the computer must be defined prior to installation. This computer is intended to be installed inside in an area suitable for extended human habitation.

For installation of a commercial computer, refer to the manual supplied by the manufacturer. Note Make sure that the chosen computer meets the M3 Sonar PHS requirements. The design and construction must allow for marine use, and the computer must be able to withstand the movements and vibrations normally experienced on a vessel.

Cable layout and interconnections Install the dummy plug into Connector B. Caution The Motion Reference Unit can be damaged if it is powered on without the dummy plug installed. Connect the 10-pin cable connector to the Sonar Head (C). Before mating, inspect the cable connector and the Sonar Head connector. Make sure that the connectors are clean and that the pins are not bent, broken, or corroded.
Interface Unit The Sonar Processor and power supply connect to a breakout box. The breakout box connects to the M3 Sonar Interface Unit with a 50-foot deck cable. Prerequisites • The Sonar Processor, breakout box, and power supply are designed for indoor use and should be installed at the operator station (wheelhouse).

Cable layout and interconnections Caution Do not power up the system if the Z-pole is oriented horizontally with the main system units out of the water. Procedure Locate the 50-foot deck cable. Connect the deck cable to the port labelled Deck Cable on the Interface Unit (!). Unroll the cable into the operator station and connect the other end to the side of the breakout box.

Creating a backup with the M3 configuration and software installation As the M3 software is pre-configured at the factory, you will lose all the M3 Sonar PHS settings if you re-install the software. We recommend creating a backup in case you need to restore your settings at a later time.
