    About this manual About this manual The purpose of this publication is to present the descriptions, procedures and basic drawings required to install the ME70 and MS70 Scientific multibeam echo sounder and sonar. Target audience The publication is intended for technical personnel such as skilled shipyard and factory workers, electricians, qualified engineers, and naval architects.

    Note If required, all documents provided by the shipyard for the physical installation of the ME70 and MS70 systems must be approved by the vessel’s national registry and corresponding maritime authority and/or classification society. Such approval must be obtained before the installation can begin. The shipowner and shipyard doing the installation are responsible for obtaining and paying for such approval.

    When the ME70 and MS70 systems are not used When you do not use the ME70 and MS70 systems, turn it off. If you are using a drop keel, make sure to retract it. Note You must never turn off the ME70 and MS70 systems by means of the on/off switch on the Processing Unit.
  • Page 14 When you are docking your vessel You must never turn on the ME70 and MS70 systems when the ship is in dry dock. The transducer can be damaged if it transmits in the open air. To prevent inadvertent use of the ME70 and MS70 systems, pull out the mains plug on the Processing Unit whenever your vessel is in dry dock.

    Transducer – description, page 21 Display – description A display is a required part of the ME70 and MS70 systems. For best readability, the display must be protected from glare and have the correct height and angle. Any commercial display can be used with the ME70 and MS70 systems, provided that the chosen display meets the minimum requirements.

    The Processing Unit is designed for rugged maritime use. It has been customized by Kongsberg Discovery. Except for the fans, the computer contains no moving parts. The computer is based on a commercial design, but the software and hardware have been specified by Kongsberg Discovery to meet the ME70 and MS70 requirements.

    • Air circulation fans Transducer – description The Kongsberg ME70 and MS70 transducer is a short cylindrical container with 800 transducer elements. The transducer elements are located at the "bottom" of the transducer. The transducer cables are provided as 25 individual cables in three bundles.
  • Page 24 As an option, Kongsberg can provide the transducer with each cable in a protective hose. These hoses start inside the transducer. Protection can be used along the entire length of the cables, and all the way up to where the cables penetrate the bulkhead to where the transceiver is installed.

    Additional optional items, page 26 Basic items provided with a standard delivery To assemble the complete ME70 and MS70 systems you need all the system units. The main units you need are provided with the standard delivery. Some items are optional.

    These items must be added to the ME70 and MS70 systems for full operational functionality. The additional items can be provided by Kongsberg Discovery. You can order them with the other basic ME70 and MS70 items. You can also purchase these items from your dealer, agent or local supplier.

    : The output AC voltage must be a sine wave. Output form Global Positioning System (GPS) The ME70 and MS70 systems require input from a global positioning system (GPS) to determine the vessel's current geographical position and if necessary also speed information.

    The ME70 and MS70 systems support the use of multiple displays, with a maximum of three. You may find it useful to have more than one display connected to the ME70 and MS70 systems. The number of displays must be chosen to fit the preferences of the crew.

    Observe and follow these safety precautions during all installation and maintenance work. WARNING The ME70 and MS70 systems operate on 115 VAC and/or 230 VAC at 50/60 Hz. This voltage is lethal! You must never work alone on high- voltage equipment!

    Navigation input requirements Observe the following input requirements from the ship navigation system to the ME70 and MS70 systems. The following input is required to achive the best performance of the ME70 and MS70 systems. • Position of the ship It can be provided both on serial line or network.

    The Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) must have the capacity to independently maintain power to the ME70 and MS70 system for a minimum of 10 minutes. This allows you to turn off the ME70 and MS70 systems in a controlled manner in the event of a power failure.

Equipment manufactured by Kongsberg Discovery is often connected to a local area network (LAN). When you connect a computer to a local area network you will always expose the data on that computer.

    Make sure that installation or maintenance of other equipment in the sonar room does not affect the ME70 and MS70 system units. The use of heavy tools in the sonar room must be avoided. This includes welding equipment, saws, hammers or similar hand or electrical equipment.

The Mean Time Between Failure (MTBF) will increase if these limits are exceeded. Observe the environmental specifications related to each unit.

    Preparations Size and access requirements A well designed sonar room with a well fitted size and easy access reduces the risk of corrosion, and simplifies maintenance. This increases system reliability. Note The physical size of the sonar room must be limited, so that in the event of a major leak, the flooding of the room will not induce instability, or cause the vessel to capsize or sink.

    Kongsberg ME70 and MS70 Installation Manual Insulation requirements The insulation in the sonar room should be the minimum equivalent of 50 mm of rock-wool. Piping passing through the space prone to condensation must be properly insulated. Heating requirements Heating is an effective method for reducing humidity. The heater in the sonar room must be dimensioned to maintain the equipment within its environmental tolerances.

The units may also be connected to peripheral devices. If these cables pass through hatches or areas where they may be damaged, they must be run in conduits.

    Introduction to transducer position The type of scientific multibeam system determines the position of the transducer. In the ME70 system, the transducer must be installed so that the transducer face points down towards the sea bottom. In the MS70 system, the transducer face must point horizontally to the side.

    At that depth, the water is free of air bubbles up, even during very high sea states. At the bottom of the drop keel, the ME70 and MS70 transducer can be installed with the transducer face flushed with the horizontal plating.

    When in operation, the noise and cavitation bubbles created by the thruster may make your ME70 and MS70 transducer useless, almost no matter where it is installed. When the bow thrusters are not in operation, the tunnel creates turbulence. If your vessel is pitching, the tunnel may be filled with air or aerated water in the upper position and release this in the lower position.

For this reason, each vessel must be treated individually in order to find the best compromise. In general, the most important factor is to avoid air bubbles in front of the transducer face.

    Preparations Acoustic noise As with any other hydroacoustic systems, the quality of the ME70 and MS70 echo data and presentations are subject to unwanted acoustic noise. The echoes from any large and small target must be detected inside the noise.

The hull plating in front of the transducer must be as smooth as possible. Important: Be especially aware of bilge keels and sacrificial anodes.

When the transducer is mounted, the elements are facing down towards the seabed.The transducer cables are provided as 25 individual cables in three bundles.
  • Page 65 A mounting ring must be welded to the lower blister plate. A clamping ring is then inserted from the bottom and up. The transducer is secured with twelve -12- M12 bolts through the clamping ring, and fastened to the mounting ring. Both rings may be supplied with the ME70 and MS70 system delivery. Note An accurate measurement of the final position and angular orientation of the transducer is always required after installation.

    Kongsberg ME70 and MS70 Installation Manual Sacrificial anodes The transducer is provided with three sacrificial zinc anodes. These are mounted on its top surface (lid). The sacrificial anodes must be replaced when 1/3 of their bodies have been spent. If it is difficult to access the zinc anodes after the transducer has been installed, additional anodes must be mounted inside the blister.

Once the transducer is positioned, the transducer cables - with the transceiver plugs - must be pulled through the steel conduit.

    The mounting ring has been designed to offer a reliable and maintenance friendly installation method for the ME70 and MS70 transducer. You can use the mounting ring in a suitable hole in a blister, in a keel box, through the hull plating, or in a drop keel.
