Starter System Testing

Condition: Starter motor fails to turn engine. NOTE: Make sure engine crankshaft is free to turn before proceeding with dynamic
testing of starter system. A digital multitester must be used for this test.
Locate the starter relay.
See "Starter Relay"
earlier in this chapter for
location reference
Disconnect the 2-wire connector at
the starter relay. Set volt meter to
read DC voltage and connect meter
leads between the DG/YEL and DG/
RED wires. Turn the key switch to
the "START" position, and push in
Is battery voltage present?
Check battery condition,
RED battery connections
at relay and 15A fuse.
Check the key switch for
proper function. Turn key to
Is there continuity between
DG/RED and BLACK?
Is there continuity between
RED and BROWN?
Set the meter to read Ohms.
Check the function of the foot

YEL and BROWN wires when the

replace assembly.
