Documented BDAB and its electric circuit, internal and external design and software are subject to change in the manufacturing process with no substantial effect on their functionality or technical and metrological performance. Hence, Polimaster reserves the right not to mention such changes in the current Operation Manual.
1 General 1.1 Designation and Application Range 1.1.1 BDAB is designed to: - measure - radiation flux density; - measure β- radiation flux density; - search for - β- sources. BDAB provides programming of the operation modes. BDAB can be used by emergency, customs, frontier, and other service staff. The instruments are used by radiological and isotope tracing laboratories and customs officers to identify radionuclide matter compositions, measure gamma radiation DER, search ionization sources to prevent the illicit trafficking of radioactive materials.

4 Design and operation principle 4.1 BDAB design Constructed as a monoblock, BDAB is enclosed in a shockproof container. Detector of α- β- radiation is based on the proportional counter with a mica window. General BDAB construction is presented in Figure 4.1. a) front panel view;...
Lower panel bears: 7 – Connector for PC or Spectroscopic Radiation Monitor РM1403 / Display and Control Unit PM1403 (RS485 or USB interfaces); 8 – Hole to fasten a handle or telescopic extension tube. Side BDAB panel bears connector for a cover of the counter window.
Built-in BDAB microcontroller processes impulses coming from the detector, controls audio and light alarms. Data communication channel enables information exchange with Spectroscopic Radiation Monitor РM1403 / Display and Control Unit PM1403 by RS-485 interface. Data communication channel enables information exchange with PC by USB interface as well.
4.4 BDAB marking Front panel of BDAB bears a plate with the following information: - unit’s name: BDAD; - manufacturer’s name; - manufacturer’s trademark; - serial number according to the numbering system of the manufacturer - year of manufacture; - IP protection level; - state register mark.
PM1403 or PC USB. “POWER” LED on the BDAB front panel starts blinking (Figure 4.1, position 4) when BDAB is connected to Spectroscopic Radiation Monitor РM1403 / Display and Control Unit PM1403 or PC. 5.3 Safety measures BDAB is electrically safe and corresponds to state safety standards of the manufacturing country.
5.4 Functionality check of BDAB Switch on BDAB (see item 6.1 or 7.1). Green LED will light on the front panel (“POWER”LED), Figure 4.1, position 4. Check ability of BDAB to switch to every operation mode: "ALPHA" LED lights blue – indicates that the measurement mode of α-radiation flux density is activated (Figure 4.1, position 1);...
1 – alarm sounder produces sound (audio) alarm when set DER, DE thresholds are exceeded; 2 – "ALARM" LED – for alarming; 3 – "BAT" LED – for On/Off state indication or Spectroscopic Radiation Monitor PM1403 charging; 4 – GPS receiver;...

2) follow the instructions displayed on the SPECTROSCOPIC RADIATION MONITOR РМ1403’s LCD, see Figure 6.2 (1). Open the γ- filter, see Figure 6.5 (А) and place BDAB on the surface being tested so that the detector window faces the surface; Attention! Handle the detector window of the - -radiation detector with care (don’t damage it) when doing measurements with - filter removed.
Figure 6.6 If value of measured flux density of - radiation exceeds upper limit 510 min Spectroscopic Radiation Monitor РМ1403’S LCD will display “OVL”. User in the measurement mode of - radiation flux density can save the measurement results into Spectroscopic Radiation Monitor РМ1403’s memory, switch sound alarm off, change set threshold value, reset accumulated statistics and go to the first step of -radiation flux density measurement.

5) holding BDAB on the surface being tested, watch the statistical error values. When the statistical error value gets below 10 %, press MENU key on Spectroscopic Radiation Monitor РМ1403. The lower the statistical error is, the more accurate the measurement data are; 6) select “Next Step”...
User in the measurement mode of β- radiation flux density can save the measurement results into Spectroscopic Radiation Monitor РМ1403 memory, switch off sound alarm, change set threshold value, reset accumulated statistics and go to the first step of β- radiation flux density measurement, Figure 6.7 (6).
Operation threshold can be changed by setting a new n coefficient within 1.0 – 9.9 range. N coefficient influences the operation threshold value – the lower the n coefficient is, the higher instrument sensitivity is. Note that the instrument false response rate increases at that. Search mode of - β- radiation sources enables the following, Figure 6.8 (4): −...
7 Using BDAB with Display and Control Unit РМ1403 7.1 Switch on/off BDAB Attention! Switch off sound alarm if a cable longer than 1.5 m will be used. BDAB is connected to Display and Control Unit РМ1403 by cable No 2 (1.5m) by RS-485 interface.
