  • Page 8 Audible Alarm Detector Processor Power Supply Figure 2 − PM1701M Block Diagram The detector unit includes: - CsI(Tl) scintillator with photodiode; - amplifier-converter board. The scintillator-photodiode transforms gamma-quanta into electric pulses that come to the amplifier-converter. The amplifier-converter transforms these signals into quasi-Gauss pulses that come to the processor unit.

    The LCD displays information about the test results, operation modes and count rate values. The LCD includes a backlight circuit which is controlled by the processor and activated by button 16. The control buttons are used to select operating modes and control operation of the instrument.

Before the self-tests, an audible alarm is shortly activated, then all segments and indicators appear on the LCD.

In the PC Communication mode the automatic background update option may be set. The auto background update allows to automatically keep the instrument at high sensitivity as the background level decreases, and to avoid false alarms when the background level increases “slowly”.

However, the instrument will automatically recalibrate itself only if there are no alarms or abrupt background changes over the algorithm- defined periods of time.     To change the coefficient n value shortly press the LIGHT button 16 (Fig.1) during the next few seconds. The preset coefficient n value will start flashing indicating that it can be changed. If the LIGHT button is not pressed during this interval of time, the instrument will automatically go to the operating mode.

    3 COMMUNICATION WITH PC. DATA LOGGING, PARAMETERS SET-UP The instrument has infrared communication capability with personal computer using data collection and processing Software. It allows the user to set various parameters, enable/disable operation modes, download event data stored in the instrument’s non-volatile memory to the database and other.

    4 MAINTENANCE Maintenance of the instrument involves preventive treatment, battery replacement and regular check up of the instrument. Routinely examine the instrument body, remove any dust, and decontaminate the instrument in situation of direct contact with radioactivity. Wipe the case with and an ethyl alcohol-saturated tissue to decontaminate the instrument.

    5 TROUBLESHOOTING Troubleshooting is limited to replacing the battery. Most of the problems can be traced to low battery or poor quality battery. Use only fresh, high quality batteries. There are no user-serviceable parts in the instrument. If repairs are required, contact the factory or your sales distributor for replacement or shipping instructions.

    6 CALIBRATION TEST PROCEDURE (REFERENCE) 6.1 General This procedure describes the calibration procedure for the PM1701M instrument. The calibration tests shall be performed by qualified calibration facilities. The instruments shall be calibrated during manufacture, after repair and periodically during operation and storage as required by national regulations.
  • Page 19 6.6 Calibration procedure 6.6.1 During the external examination check the instrument against the following requirements: - the instrument delivery kit shall comply with the operating manual; - the instrument must be marked with clear inscriptions; - the instrument must be free from pollution and mechanical damages that may affect operation of the instrument.
  • Page 20 Compare main relative error δ to limits of permissible main error δ = ± 35 %. If δ > 35 %, the instrument is rejected as defective; if δ ≤ 35 %, the instrument is considered ready for use.

    7 SHIPPING AND STORAGE Instruments may be shipped by any closed transport, as long as the air temperature is between -50 to +50°C. When carried by sea, instruments should be packaged in hermetic plastic bags with silica gel. When carried by air, instruments should be packaged in hermetic compartments.

    8 WARRANTY 8.1 The manufacturer warrants this instrument to meet specifications provided that the user follows the instructions for the operation of the instrument, shipping and storage described in the Operation manual. 8.2 Warranty operation period is 18 months since the date the instrument putting into operation.
