BGP4+ overview
The implementation of IPv6 supports multiprotocol BGP (MBGP) extensions that allow Border Gateway Protocol version 4 plus
(BGP4+) to distribute routing information. BGP4+ supports all of the same features and functionality as IPv4 BGP (BGP4).
IPv6 MBGP enhancements include:
•
An IPv6 unicast address family and network layer reachability information (NLRI)
•
Next hop attributes that use IPv6 addresses
NOTE
The implementation of BGP4+ supports the advertising of routes among different address families. However, it supports
BGP4+ unicast routes only; it does not currently support BGP4+ multicast routes.
BGP global mode
Configurations that are not specific to address family configuration are available in the BGP global configuration mode.
