2.6. General information about the fuel

You have chosen to heat your home with CO
. Pressing of waste wood into standardised wood pellets means that an inexpensive
fuel can be produced from untreated wood waste and converted cleanly and ex-
tremely efficiently into thermal energy when combusted.

2.6.1. What are wood pellets?

Wood pellets consist of 100% untreated wood waste (wood chips, sawdust, etc.). The
dry wood waste is shredded and pressed under high pressures to form wood pellets.
The addition of binders or other additives is not permitted.
The standards DIN 51731, ÖNORM M 7135 and DIN plus specify the following qualities
for wood pellets 6 mm in diameter:
Length:
10-33 mm
Diameter:
6 mm
Bulk weight:
Approx. 650 kg/m
Calorific value:
5 kWh/kg
Residual
mois-
< 10%
ture:
Ash content:
< 0.5 %
Density:
1.12 kg/dm
2 kg wood pellets are equivalent in energy to approx. 1 litre of heating oil. Volumetri-
cally, 3 m³ wood pellets will replace approx. 1000 litres of heating oil.
Note

2.6.2. How can you recognise "good" wood pellets?

Differences in the quality of wood pellets can be due to the preparation and com-
pressing of the raw material. The following quality features can be used for a basic
visual check of wood pellets when purchasing them. Precise quality features can
only be determined with suitable technical analysis equipment.
Superior quality
Inferior quality

Wood pellets must be protected against moisture! They
will expand greatly if exposed to moisture and can no
longer be used as a fuel.
Keep wood pellets dry during transport and storage.
The surface is shiny and smooth. The wood pellets are uniform in
length and have a low dust content.
The surface has vertical and horizontal cracks. The wood pellets
have different lengths and a high dust content.
