    Introduction Introduction The RUGGEDCOM RSG2488 is a utility grade, fully managed, industrial Ethernet switch designed to operate reliably in harsh environments. With a rugged metal enclosure and an optional conformal coating, the RSG2488 provides a high level of immunity to electromagnetic interference and heavy electrical surges, and can withstand temperatures between -40 and 85 °C (-40 and 185 °F).

The NO (Normally Open) contact is closed when the unit is powered and there are no active alarms.

The serial console port provides access to ROS's console interface, while the management port provides access to ROS's console and Web interfaces.

    Section 2.6.1 Protection On Twisted-Pair Data Ports Siemens does not recommend the use of copper cabling of any length for critical, real-time substation automation applications. All copper Ethernet ports on RUGGEDCOM products include transient suppression circuitry to protect against damage from electrical transients and conform with IEC 61850-3 and IEEE 1613 Class 1 standards.

Each set of communication ports is part of a field replaceable module that makes switching ports fast and easy.

    The RSG2488 supports several 10/100/1000Base-TX Ethernet ports that allow connection to standard Category 5 (CAT-5) unshielded twisted-pair (UTP) cables with RJ45 or Siemens's FastConnect RJ45 male connectors. The RJ45 and FastConnect RJ45 connectors are directly connected to the chassis ground on the device and can accept CAT-5 shielded twisted-pair (STP) cables.
