SECTION 11—BATTERIES

Disconnecting Battery Cables

The use of rubber gloves and chemical goggles and face shield is recommended
when working with batteries.
NEVER allow any of your tools and/or battery cable(s) to contact BOTH battery
terminal(s)/post(s) at the same time. An electrical short may occur and serious per-
sonal injury or damage may occur.
NOTE: For this procedure, refer to FIGURE 11.3 and FIGURE 11.4.
1. Remove the seat. Refer to Removing/Installing the Seat Assembly on page 44.
2. Remove the batteries. Refer to Removing/Installing Batteries from/into Battery Tray
on page 65.
3. Cut the tie-wrap that secures the battery terminal cap in place (Detail "B" of
FIGURE 11.4).
4. Slide terminal cap(s) UP on the battery cable(s) (FIGURE 11.3).
5. Disconnect POSITIVE (+) RED battery cable from the POSITIVE (+) battery terminal/
post (FIGURE 11.4).
6. Disconnect NEGATIVE (-) BLACK battery cable from NEGATIVE (-) battery terminal/
post (FIGURE 11.4).

Charging Batteries

Never attempt to recharge the batteries by attaching cables directly to the battery
terminals.
DO NOT attempt to recharge the batteries and operate the wheelchair at the same
time.
DO NOT attempt to recharge the batteries when the wheelchair has been exposed
to ANY type of moisture.
DO NOT attempt to recharge the batteries when the wheelchair is outside.
DO NOT sit in the wheelchair while recharging the batteries.
DO NOT attempt to recharge the batteries using BOTH the on-board battery
charger AND an independent battery charger (plugged into the joystick charger
port) at the SAME time. Doing so will reduce the life of the batteries.
READ and CAREFULLY follow the individual instructions for each charger (supplied
or purchased). If charging instructions are not supplied, consult a qualified techni-
cian for proper procedures.
