GEAR-CHANGE LEVER
IN MANUAL TRANSMISSION
Chart for gear-change lever posi-
tions in manual transmission is
applied on the top of its handle (Fig.
39).
1, 2, 3, 4, 5 – first, second, third,
fourth and fifth gears.
R – reverse gear.
Neutral position – between third
and fourth gear.
Before starting the engine,
make sure the gear-change lever
is in the neutral position.
For backing run stop the vehicle,
press the clutch pedal, after a pause
(not less than 3 seconds), pull the
gear-change lever from the neutral
position to the right until it stops, and
move it back in the direction of the
vehicle travel.
If you fail to switch on the gear, re-
turn the lever to neutral position, re-
lease the clutch pedal, then depress
the clutch again and try to switch on
the gear.
Call attention to full declutching
when changing gears, for which the
clutch pedal must be depressed until
it stops. Otherwise, it may be diffi-

cult to change gears and it may
lead to increased wear of syn-
chronizers.
Actuate forward gears according
to the scheme on the handle, and
make no efforts to gear-change
lever.
ATTENTION!
Actuate the reverse gear only
when the vehicle is stopped.
Actuating reverse gear is car-
ried out only with the vehicle
stopped and no sooner than in
three seconds after depressing
the clutch pedal.
While driving, do not keep your
arm on the gear-change lever,
this may result in damage and
premature wear of gear-change
parts (make no effort to the gear-
change lever).
