cause substan t ial stee r ing and handling difficul t ies. Be
extreme ly careful when running in a following sea. The
effect of trim tabs is ampli fi ed under such condi t ions.
Steer i ng and handling difficulties can result from im-
proper trim tab usage, espe cially in a following sea. If
unsure of proper trim tab positioning, raise the trim tabs
to the full-up position.
When run ning at high en gine speeds, be sure
the trim tabs are in the full up posi tion. Trim tab
ac tion should be only enough to com pen sate
for any list ing. Trim tab ad just m ents at high
speeds are ex tre mely critical. Be prepared to
slow down should handling difficulties arise.
When running in a displacement (very slow speed)
mode, better efficiency will be obtained with the trim
tabs in the full-up position.
C. Trim Tab Maintenance
Check the fluid level of the trim tab reservoir often.
Always keep the fluid level between the designat e d
marks on the trim tab pump-reservoir. Refer to the
manufacturers information for specifi c ations on the type
of fluid to be used and other operation and mainte-
nance infor mation.

INSTRUMENTATION

The helm stations on Four Winns
equipped with a complete set of engine instrument
gauges. See Figure E4. These instrument gauges al-
low the boat operator to constantly monitor the opera-
tional condi tion of the engine. Close observa tion of
these instrument gauges could save the engine from
damage.

A. Tachometer
The tachometer indicates the speed of the engine in
revolutions per minute (RPM). See Figure E5 This
speed is not the boat speed or necessarily the speed
of the propel ler. The tachometer may not register
zero with the ignition key in the OFF position.

NOTICE
Never exceed the maximum recommend ed
operat ing RPM of your engine. Main taining
maximum, or close to maximum RPM for
extended periods can reduce the life of the
engine.
Some engines are equipped with devices that limit
engine RPM in accordance with the oil pres sure, or
engine temperature. Refer to the engine manual
included in the owner' packet for additional informa-
tion.
B. Speedometer
The speedometer on the SL series models are de-
signed to be used like an automobile speedometer.
See Figure E6. This automotive helm design helps
give the driver a familiar feel.
