Care and maintenance of the vehicle
Note
As long as the indicator lights  or  illuminate, engine problems, increased fuel
consumption and reduce engine power can be expected.
Catalytic converter
ä
First read and observe the introductory information and safety warn-
ings
on page 181.
The catalytic converter is used for exhaust gas treatment, and helps to reduce
pollutant emissions in the exhaust. To ensure maximum service life of the ex-
haust system and the catalytic converter of the petrol engine:
● Use only unleaded petrol.
● Never run the fuel tank completely empty.
● Do not overfill with engine oil ⇒  p age 136.
● Do not tow-start the vehicle but use a jump-start aid ⇒  p age 209, Jump start-
ing.
If misfiring, power loss or irregular engine running occurs while driving, reduce
speed immediately and have the vehicle checked by a specialist garage. Unburnt
fuel could otherwise get into the exhaust system and thus into the atmosphere.
The catalytic converter may also be damaged by overheating!
For the sake of the environment
Even if the emission control system is operating properly, a sulphur-like exhaust
odour may be produced under certain operating conditions of the engine. This de-
pends on the sulphur content of the fuel.
