The Input shaft is carried by two bearings.
See Figure 5.59.
If one bearing is bad, both should be replaced.
The second bearing fits into the gear positioning
bracket.
It can be easily driven out of the bracket for
replacement.
The input shaft fits more tightly into the lower
bearing than into the bearing in the gear position-
ing bracket.
The bearing on the splined end of the shaft tends
to slip off of the shaft when the gear positioning
bracket is removed.
The bearing on the plain end of the shaft tends to
stay with the shaft when the shaft is removed.

To install the input shaft and bearing, insert them from
the inside of the chain case.
12.
Drive the bearing into place: See Figure 5.60.
Apply force only to the outer race of the bearing.
When the outer race is flush with the inner sur-
face of the chain case housing, the bearing is
"home".
13.
Reverse the remainder of the removal process to
complete the installation of the input shaft.
