6 Replication

The following topics are covered in this section:
What is an appliance (page 60)
Status (Replication) (page 60)
Partner Appliances (Replication) (page 62)
Local Settings (Replication) (page 67)
Event History (Replication) (page 71)
VT Mappings (Replication) (page 72)
NAS Mappings (Replication) (page 78)
If you are new to replication we strongly recommend that you read the following documents, which
are available from the HP web site. They provide a detailed discussion about replication deployment
strategies and terminology and include examples using the Replication and Recovery wizards.
HP StoreOnce Backup System Concepts Guide: If you are new to the HP StoreOnce Backup
System, it is a good idea to read this guide before you configure your system. It describes the
StoreOnce technology and advises how to plan the workload being placed on the HP
StoreOnce Backup System in order to optimize performance and minimize the impact of
deduplication, replication and housekeeping operations competing for resources.
HP StoreOnce Best Practices for VTL, NAS and Replication implementations: This guide
describes best practices and also includes examples using different backup applications.

What is an appliance?

Replication can take place between multi-node and single-node StoreOnce Backup Systems. The
GUI for both refers to both Replication Targets and Sources as appliances. It is important to
understand the different meaning of appliance within the multi-node and single-node environment.
In a single-node StoreOnce Backup System, the appliance is the physical device or server that
contains the data to be replicated. All mapping is done using the physical IP addresses of the
target and source StoreOnce Backup Systems.
In a multi-node StoreOnce Backup System, the appliance is the service set that contains the
data to be replicated. This means that each B6000 Backup System has at least two service
sets that can be selected as appliances. (A fully expanded HP B6000 Backup System would
have eight service sets.) All mapping is done using the virtual IP addresses of the target and
source service sets.
Within this chapter and this section of the GUI the term appliance and service set are synonymous.

Status (Replication)

Select Replication from the B6200 StoreOnce menu item to display all aspects and tasks associated
with replication. There are four tabs on the main Replication page and two further Navigator
options for configuring VTL and NAS mappings. The default tab when you select this option from
the Navigator is the Status tab.
Once on the Replication page users with an Admin login can create mappings and configure
replication; operators can use this page to view replication settings.
NOTE:
With the current version of the software there are no equivalent CLI commands available
for the tasks described in this chapter.
