CHANGING
THE TRANSMISSION OIL
Carefully read page 25 (TRANSMISSION
OIL) and page 43 (MAINTENANCE).
Check the transmission oil level every
4000 km (2500 mi), change it after the first
1000 km (625 mi) and successively every
12000 km (7500 mi).
CHANGING
Start the engine, see page 36 (STAR-
N
TING) and let it idle for a few minutes, in
order to facilitate the outflow of the oil du-
ring the draining phase.
Position the vehicle on firm and
flat ground.

Stop the engine and let it cool down for
at least ten minutes, in order to allow the
oil to flow back to the oil pan and to cool
down.
When warmed up, the engine
contains hot oil; therefore, while
carrying out the operations de-
scribed here below be particularly care-
ful, in order to avoid burns.

Remove the left fairing, see page 56
(REMOVING THE SIDE FAIRINGS).

Keep the vehicle in vertical position, with
the two wheels resting on the ground.
N
Put a container (1) with at least 700 cm>
capacity in correspondence with the
drain plug (2).
Unscrew and remove the drain plug (2).
N

Unscrew and remove the filling plug (3).
Drain the oil and let it drip into the contai-
N
ner (1) for a few minutes.
N
Remove the metal residues from the
drain plug (2) magnet.
N
Check and if necessary replace the sea-
ling washer of the drain plug (2).
N
Screw and tighten the drain plug (2).
Drain plug (2) driving torque:
27 Nm (2.7 kgm).
Pour about 600 cm> of transmission oil
N
through the filling opening (3), see
page 82 (LUBRICANT CHART).
N
Tighten the filling plug (3).
Start the engine, see page 36 (STAR-
N
TING) and let it idle for about one minu-
te, in order to ensure the filling up of the
transmission oil circuit.
Check the oil level and top up if necessary,
see page 48 (CHECKING THE TRANS-
MISSION OIL LEVEL AND TOPPING UP).
Tighten the filling plug and the
drain plug thoroughly and make
sure that there are no oil leaks.
Periodically check that there are no
leaks in correspondence with the oil
pan cover seal.
Do not use the vehicle with insufficient
lubrication or with contaminated or un-
suitable lubricants, since this would ac-
celerate the wear of the moving parts
and may also cause irreparable failures.
