ENGINE TROUBLESHOOTING
TROUBLESHOOTING
ENGINE DOES NOT START OR IS HARD TO START
• Check the engine oil level before troubleshooting.
• (*) Refer to page of base shop manual 62VH300.
Operate the recoil starter and check whether the
engine cranks.
Cranks
Check the air cleaner element (page 3-4*).
Clean
Disconnect the fuel tube connecting to the
carburetor and check the fuel flow.
Fuel reaches
Check the spark plug (page 3-4).
Normal
Perform the spark test (page 15-4).
Spark
Perform the cylinder compression test (page 10-
11).
Normal
Restart the engine according to the starting
procedure.

Check the recoil starter (page 7-2).
Cannot be cranked
If it operates properly, disassemble the engine
and replace the faulty part.
Clogged
Clean or replace the a air cleaner element
(page 3-4*).
No fuel
Check the fuel tube and strainer for clogs (page
5-4).
Dry
Disassemble the carburetor to clean the
carburetor ports, jet, and nozzle (page 5-8).
If the spark plug condition is correct, clean and
dry the electrodes and then restart the engine. If
Wet
the engine does not start and the electrodes are
wet again, check the following:
– Choke control system (page 5-2*)
– Carburetor float valve (page 5-7)
No spark
Perform the Ignition System Troubleshooting
(page 15-2).
Compression
is too high
Check the valve clearance (page 3-5) and then
perform the cylinder compression test.
If the cylinder compression is too high, remove
carbon deposits in the combustion chamber.
(page 3-7).
Check the valve clearance (page 3-5) and then
perform the cylinder compression test.
If the cylinder compression is too low, perform a
leak down test.
Compression If there is no air leakage in the engine, check the
is too low following (page 10-12):
- Valve spring free length
- Valve seat width
- Valve face irregularly worn
- Piston ring side clearance
- Piston ring width
- Piston ring end gap
- Piston skirt O.D.
- Cylinder sleeve I.D.
