Connect the Calibrator to a DUT

The Calibrator is capable of supplying lethal voltages. To avoid shock hazard, do not
make connections to the output terminals when any voltage is present. Placing the
Product in Standby may not be enough to avoid shock hazard, since J could be
pushed accidentally. Push R and verify that the Calibrator is in Standby before
making connections to the output terminals.
The outputs labeled OUTPUT (HI and LO) source voltage, resistance, capacitance, inductance, and
simulate resistance temperature detector (RTD) outputs. The LO terminal connects to the analog
signal ground inside the guard shield. This signal line may or may not be tied to the guard shield,
depending on the Guard setting. See
connection. An external connection is required to connect the signal LO to the chassis ground.
When an oscilloscope calibration option is installed, the coaxial connectors labeled SCOPE OUT and
TRIG deliver signals for oscilloscope calibration.
The socket labeled TC is used to measure thermocouples and to generate simulated thermocouple
outputs.

Recommended Cable and Connector Types

To prevent possible electrical shock, fire, or personal injury, do not touch exposed
metal on banana plugs, they can have lethal voltages.
Cables to the Calibrator are connected to the OUTPUT and SENSE terminals. To avoid errors induced
by thermal voltages (thermal emfs), use connectors and conductors made of copper or materials that
generate small thermal emfs when joined to copper. Avoid using nickel-plated connectors. Optimum
results can be obtained by using Fluke Model 5730A-7002 Low Thermal EMF Test Leads, which are
constructed of well-insulated copper wire and tellurium copper connectors. See
Accessories.

55XXA/DMMCAL Cable

The Fluke 55XXA/DMMCAL cable is specifically designed to connect handheld and bench DMMs to
the Calibrator. The cable provides all the connections needed for most DMMs and provides the lowest
thermal EMF, lowest leakage, and best ac performance possible. Additionally, the 55xxA/DMMCAL
cable minimizes the number of setup changes which reduces operator intervention and increases
throughput when you calibrate DMMs. The cable supports most recessed banana-style terminal
DMMs. Some advanced meters may have a safety feature that if a test lead is plugged into the mA/ μ A
or A terminal and the rotary switch is turned to a non-current function, the Meter chirps and flashes
LEAd. In this case, remove the current leads while you test other functions.
