Connecting an IP Phone

IP phones enable calls through the Ethernet LAN (Fig. 7.7). The interface between
a digital phone connected to the system and an IP phone connected to the LAN is as
follows:
1.
The connection between a digital phone and an IP phone is established or released
using the IP address of the LAN connected to the system.
2.
The digital phone converts analogue voice data to PCM voice data and trans-
mits the data to the MGI module via the 16 DLI module.
3.
PCM voice data is converted to packet data by the MGL module and transmit-
ted to the IP phone.
4.
The IP phone converts packet voice data to analogue voice signals and sends
the signals through the phone receiver or speaker.
5.
Voice signals from the IP phone are converted to packet data and transmitted
to the MGI module. The MGI module converts the packet voice data to PCM
voice data and transmits the data to the digital phone through the 16DLI mod-
ule. The digital phone converts the PCM voice data to analogue data.
IP phones must be supported by an MGI module which allows access to the LAN. Set
up IP phones using MMC programming.
