BEARING CARRIER SERVICE - GENERAL XP / GENERAL XP 4
FRONT BEARING CARRIER REMOVAL /
INSPECTION
1. Elevate front of vehicle and safely support machine
under the frame area.
CAUTION
Serious injury may result if machine tips or falls. Be
sure machine is secure before beginning this service
procedure. Wear eye protection when removing
bearings and seals.
2. Check bearings for side play by grasping the top and
bottom of the tire firmly and checking for movement.
The tire should rotate smoothly without binding or
rough spots.
3. Remove the four wheel nuts and remove the front
wheel.
4. Remove the cotter pin and loosen the front wheel hub
castle nut . Remove the nut, and cone washer from
the front wheel hub assembly.
5. Remove and discard the two front brake caliper
mounting bolts and remove the caliper from the brake
disc. Refer to Front Brake Caliper Removal
procedure.
IMPORTANT
Do not hang the caliper by the brake line. Use wire to
hang caliper to prevent damage to the brake line.
6. Remove the front wheel hub assembly.

7. Remove the tie rod end fastener from the bearing
carrier.
8. Remove and discard the upper and lower ball joint
pinch bolts and nuts.
9. Using a soft faced hammer, lightly tap on the bearing
carrier while removing the upper and lower ball joint
ends.
10. Remove the bearing carrier from the front drive shaft.
11. Rotate bearing by hand and check for smooth
rotation. Visually inspect bearing for moisture, dirt, or
corrosion.
NOTICE
Due to extremely close tolerances and minimal wear,
the bearings must be inspected visually, and by feel.
While rotating bearings by hand, inspect for rough
spots, discoloration, or corrosion. The bearings should
turn smoothly and quietly, with no detectable up and
down movement and minimal movement sideways
between inner and outer race.
12. Replace bearing if moisture, dirt, corrosion, or
roughness is evident.
