Fuel and Engine Exhaust Precautions

Emission Control System

Your vehicle is equipped w ith an em ission control system (the catalytic converter is part of
this system ) that enables your vehicle to com ply w ith existing exhaust em issions
requirem ents.
P a rk in s O ver Things T hat Burn:
P arking over o r near a nything inflam m able, such a s dry grass, is dangerous. Even
w ith the engine tu rn ed off, the exhaust system could ignite it because the exhaust
system g ets very h o t du rin g norm al use. A resu lting fir e could cause serious injury or
death. N ever park over o r n ear anyth in g inflam m able.
Ignoring the follow ing precautions could cause lead to accum ulate on the catalyst inside
the converter or cause the converter to get very hot. E ither condition w ill dam age the
converter and cause poor perform ance.
• U SE ONLY U N LE A D ED FU EL.
• D o n 't drive y our M azda w ith any sign o f engine m alfunction.
• D o n 't coast w ith the ignition sw itch turned off.
• D o n 't descend steep grades in gear w ith the ignition sw itch turned off.
• D o n 't operate the engine at high idle for m ore than 5 m inutes.
• D o n 't tam per w ith the em ission control system . A ll inspections and adjustm ents m ust
b e m ade by a qualified technician.
• D o n 't try to push-start or pull-start y o u r vehicle.
N O TE
U nder U.S. federal law, any m odification to the original-equipm ent em ission control
system before the first sale and registration o f a vehicle is subject to penalties. In som e
states, such m odification m ade on a used vehicle is also subject to penalties.
