Migration best practices

Before you migrate your network to SPBM, perform an audit to determine if the desired configuration
and traffic is supported by SPBM. If you determine that the migration is supported, follow the high
level steps in the following sections to ensure a successful migration.
Supported traffic on SPBM networks
SPBM supports the following kinds of traffic:
• Layer-2 bridged traffic
• IPv4 unicast routed traffic on the Global Router
• IPv4 unicast routed traffic using a VRF
• IPv4 Unicast routed traffic using an IP VPN
• IPv4 multicast routed traffic
• IGMP snooping — SPBM supports multicast with L2 VSN using IGMP, L3 VSN, and IP
Shortcuts.
Note:
IPv6 routed traffic (unicast or multicast) can only be bridged on an L2 VSN. SPBM does not
support IPv6 with IP Shortcuts or L3 VSN.
Multicast over SPBM and PIM
Before enabling Multicast over SPBM for a VLAN, you must disable PIM on the peer switches for
that VLAN.
Multicast over SPBM and IGMP Snooping
For traditional multicast (pre release 7.2) and Multicast over SPBM to work correctly, use the
following guidelines:
• If you want to use Multicast over SPBM, enable both Multicast over SPBM and IGMP Snoop on
each BEB in the SPBM network.
• If you do not want to use Multicast over SPBM, disable both Multicast over SPBM and IGMP
Snoop on each BEB in the SPBM network.
