Adding and replacing a memory card

V
CAUTION!
Both hot-add and hot-replace must be activated in BIOS setup and
supported by the operation system. Otherwise, no hot-plug operations
are possible. The server must then be shut down before the operation
can be started.
Only memory cards of the same type and the same settings may be
replaced or added. The new memory card will not be put into operation
if the configuration is not consistent.
I
Replacing and adding DIMMs to the memory cards is described in the
Options Guide.
Hot-adding a memory card
Your server supports up to four memory cards. Each memory card must have
at least one pair of DIMMs installed before being installed in the server. You can
hot-add one memory card to each of the memory power buses, provided your
operating system supports that function. Also, hot-add must be activated in
BIOS setup (see "Memory Settings" on page 59).
Complete the following steps to add a memory card:
Ê Slide the server out of the rack until the slide rails lock into place.
Ê Remove the cover from the server (see "Removing the Cover" on page 108).
Ê Prepare the memory card:
Ê Touch the static-protective package that contains the memory card to
any unpainted surface on the outside of the server; then, remove the
memory card from the package.
Ê Place the memory card on a flat, static-protected surface with the DIMM
connectors facing up.
Ê Install DIMMs in the memory card (see the Options Guide for that
procedure).
Ê Add the memory card:
V
CAUTION!
When moving the memory card, do not allow it to touch any compo-
nents or structures inside the server.
