Removing and installing the spare

wheel

Spare wheel under the rear of the vehi-
cle
Removing
Take the lug wrench and auxiliary tool for the
X
spare wheel lifter out of the vehicle tool kit
(
page 261).
Y
Open the tailgate/rear door.
X
Carefully pry off protective cap : with a suit-
X
able tool, e.g. a screwdriver. Be careful not to
damage the paintwork or the covering cap
when doing so.
Push auxiliary tool ; through the opening
X
into the winch guide.
Attach wheel bolt wrench = to auxiliary
X
tool ; for the spare wheel lifter.
Turn wheel bolt wrench = in the direction of
X
arrow ? until you feel resistance or until the
friction clutch of the winch overwinds.
The spare wheel has been lowered.
Hold the spare wheel by handle E on the
X
cover tray and pull it out from under the vehi-
cle.
Press cable B downwards and twist it
X
against spring D using wheel gripper C.
Wheel gripper C is released.
Pull wheel gripper C through the opening in
X
cover tray E and out of the wheel brace.
Remove cover tray E from the spare wheel.

When winding upwards, make sure that the
handle of the cover tray points backwards.
Check that the spare wheel is correctly and
firmly positioned:
after every wheel change

at every maintenance interval
R
at least once a year
R
Installing

Alloy wheels cannot be transported under
the vehicle. In this case, transport the alloy
wheel in the cargo compartment and only
raise cover tray E.
Remove lug wrench = and auxiliary tool ;
X
for the spare wheel lifter from the vehicle tool
kit (
page 261).
Y
Place the wheel on the ground with the wheel
X
brace pointing upwards.
