Problems with the engine
Problem
The engine does not
start.
The starter motor can be
heard.
The engine does not

The starter motor can be
heard. The reserve fuel
warning lamp is lit and
the fuel gage is at 0.
The engine does not

Important safety notes

WARNING
If the engine speed is above the idling speed
and you engage transmission position D or R,
the vehicle could pull away suddenly. There is
a risk of an accident.
Possible causes/consequences and M M Solutions
There is a malfunction in the fuel supply.
Turn the key back to position 0 in the ignition lock before attempting

to start the engine again.
Start the engine again.

Please bear in mind that lengthy and frequent starting attempts will
drain the battery.
If the engine does not start after several attempts:
Consult a qualified specialist workshop.

The fuel tank has been run dry.
Refuel the vehicle.
X
The on-board voltage is too low. The battery is too weak or discharged.
Jump-start the vehicle (

If the engine cannot be jump-started, the starter motor is faulty.
Consult a qualified specialist workshop.

The battery is discharged or faulty.
Check the battery for damage.

Charge the battery (
page 254).

There is a malfunction in the engine electronics or a mechanical com-
ponent of the engine management system.
Only depress the accelerator pedal slightly.

Unburnt fuel may otherwise get into the catalytic converter and
damage it.
Have the cause rectified immediately at a qualified specialist work-

shop.
When engaging transmission position D or R,
always firmly depress the brake pedal and do
not simultaneously accelerate.

The automatic transmission switches to neu-
tral position N when you switch off the engine.
The vehicle may roll away. There is a risk of an
accident.
