Introduction
The DD 820 M surround decoder expands the stereo
version of the  M 820 system to form a high-quality
5.1 channel home cinema system. It adds two picture
and sound inputs to the M-system for the DVD 820 M
DVD player and a satellite or cable receiver (set-top
box).
The DD 820 M integrates completely into the M 820's
operating system, and is controlled entirely by the F6
system remote control handset.
Information on the operating mode of the DD 820 M is
displayed on the central system screen of the PT 820 M.
The DD 820 M also features an on-screen menu which
displays operational and set-up functions in a clear form
on the screen of a TV set connected to the system.
Note:
These instructions only cover the DD 820 M surround
decoder. For information on installing and setting up the
full system and using it for the first time please read the
operating instructions supplied with the other system
components.

Operation

Switching On/Off
The DD 820 M is automatically switched on and off
together with the other components of the M-system.

Stereo and Surround modes

The  M-system features a high-quality audiophile
stereo amplifier in the PT 820 M and PA 820 M, which is
complemented by the DD 820 M decoder to form a 5.1
channel surround and home cinema system.
In analogue stereo mode the PT 820 M is responsible for
all control and adjustment functions; the DD 820 M is
removed entirely from the signal path.
In surround mode the DD 820 M assumes the function of
the central control unit. The advantage of this design
philosophy is that it offers no interference to pure
analogue stereo reproduction, with a resultant gain in
potential musicality. Such quality is extremely difficult to
obtain with conventional surround arrangements.
Please read the section 'The
for more details and background information on this
subject.
Note:
As already mentioned, in analogue stereo mode the
DD 820 M surround decoder is switched out of circuit in
order to achieve highest possible sound quality. For this
reason the 'on-screen menus' of the DD 820 M, as
described in these instructions, are not available in this
mode.
Setups in stereo-mode occur, like M-System without
DD 820 M, via the integral display screen of the
PT 820 M.
