4.1.2 Positioning Your Microphones

For most purposes, the ideal microphone placement
is as close to the sound source as possible but far
enough away so the pattern will pick up the entire
audio source. When recording an ensemble, place the
stereo microphone pair about two to five feet above and
behind the conductor. This will allow you to capture the
ensemble with less interference from audience noise.
Power User Tip: The PS626 microphones are sensitive and
will pick up everything in the room, so when recording a
live event, avoiding having a large distance from the sound
source; otherwise your recording may pick up audience noise
and mobile phone rings! In the studio, you can experiment
with distance to capture more or less room ambience.
Instrumental Ensembles
Point the microphones down at the second row of the
ensemble. The brass and percussion in the back of the
ensemble are more easily captured by the microphone.
Angling your microphones toward the front of the ensemble
will better capture quieter instruments like woodwinds
and strings, resulting in a more balanced recording.
