phone line, preferably direct to the public telephone network (some PBXs do not pass a ring signal which
the modem recognizes for phone pickup) and a standard power outlet should be available for use during
service. The modem will be plugged in only when service is being performed. An additional phone line for
voice communication during modem use can assist in making service most efficient.

Prepress Environment

Figure 12 illustrates a typical network prepress environment connected through a 10/100BaseT network
hub. A typical prepress system includes items such as:
v Scanner
v Desktop publishing PC or Macintosh workstations
v File archive and backup system, such as a DAT tape storage device
v Portable file media, such as a CD-ROM writer or removable disk drives

Installation Planning Overview

Consider the following items for an easier installation.
v Ensure that the environmental, electrical, and space requirements have been met. Work with your
marketing representative to ensure that a forklift and forklift operator are available at time of delivery to
move the shipping crates to the installation site.
v Ensure that adequate space is available to unpack the crates at the installation site.
Note: IBM recommends that you move the crates to the area where the printer will be installed before
unpacking the crates. This lessens the possibility of damage.
v Do not unpack the crates until the service representative is present.
