Conditioned engine state. During this engine state, the print tower conditioning is turned on and the paper
conditioning and fusing systems are turned off The engine is idle and no printing is taking place.
conditioning circuit. A circuit that controls the temperature and humidity of the air in the print tower to ensure stable
print quality and to filter ozone and dust.
console switch. The switch used to turn on the printer's two control computers.
control strip. (1) A strip of information that can be attached to a print job and be used to measure registration and
density. (2) A page-setup parameter used to specify the name of the control strip to be appended to a print job. (3) A
Properties window Imaging field used to view a list of all resident control strips and to select a control strip to add to a
job or to override the control strip specified in the Page Setup window.
Cooling. When highlighted in the Paper and Engine Conditioning window, indicates either the air temperature and/or
the relative humidity in the print tower is higher than its setpoint and the air is being cooled.
cooling unit. A closed-loop refrigeration unit, physically separated from the print tower, that provides cooled water for
printer tower conditioning system.
Copy count. (1) A page-setup parameter used to specify the number of copies to be printed of each signature of a
job. (2) A Properties window Imaging setting used to override the number of copies specified in the Page Setup
window.
corona. (1) The effect of ionizing air with a high voltage, creating a charge that can be used to perform various
functions during printing or copying. (2) In printers, a small diameter wire (or wires, depending on the function) to
which a high voltage is applied, causing ionization of the air. The ionization creates an electrical charge to perform
various functions during the printing process.
corona wire. A wire with high voltage that emits charged particles.
Corona current. A paper-conditioning parameter that displays the current of the first transfer corona. This current is
adjusted automatically.
Counters. A window used to monitor the number of printed, wasted, and total sheets of paper. Do not use the values
in this window to determine the age of the developer. See Age Developer.
crop. To remove unwanted areas of an image, usually indicated by crop marks on the original.
cross-web registration. The accurate alignment of the four-color separations of an image on top of each other in
the cross direction of the paper movement (across the web).
Cut Sheets. A Properties window Finishing setting used to specify whether the sheets of a printed job will be cut or
not cut.
cutter. Cuts the paper perpendicular to the paper movement before the paper leaves the print tower.
D
Data depth. (1) A page-setup parameter used to specify the number of bits with which each spot's gray level is
described. 2 bps (bits per spot) means a spot can have 8 levels of gray. Gray levels determine the density of color
printed (C,M,Y or K). (2) A Properties window Imaging setting used to override the data depth specified in the Page
Setup window.
day conditioning. The electronic control of temperature, relative humidity, and air filtering in the print tower during
the day.
DCS. Desktop color separation file.
default.ini file. A file included with the printer software that contains default page-setup-parameter values.
Delete. A function in the Image Disk, Queue Manager, and Image Memory windows used to delete a resident job
from the lists of jobs in these windows.
densitometer. An instrument used for measuring color density on a printed page.
