6. Connecting a Console to the Switch
ProCurve 8100fl switches have a console interface for managing and
configuring the switch. The console can be accessed via the following
methods.
■
Out-of-band: Connect a PC or VT-100 terminal directly to the switch
using the RJ-45 to DB-9 adapter and straight-through cable that comes
with each ProCurve Switch 8100fl. For console access, you can directly
connect to the RJ-45 serial port on the top of the switch chassis or connect
through a Telnet session to the 10/100Base-T Ethernet port on the
management module. (The 10/100Base-T Ethernet port requires initial
configuration. Refer to the Management and Configuration Guide for
detailed information.)
■
In-band: Manage the switch using a Telnet session from a workstation on
your network with a VT-100 terminal emulator. This method requires that
you configure the switch with an IP address and a subnet mask by using
either out-of-band console access or through DHCP/Bootp.
ProCurve 8100fl switches can support simultaneous out-of-band console and
in-band Telnet sessions.
Terminal Configuration
To connect a console to the switch, configure the PC terminal emulator as a
VT-100 or ANSI terminal, or use a VT-100 terminal and configure it to operate
with the following settings:
■
Baud rate set to 9600
■
8 data bits, 1 stop bit, no parity, and flow control set to None
For the Windows Terminal program, disable (uncheck) the "Use Function,
■
Arrow, and Ctrl Keys for Windows" option.
■
For the Hilgrave HyperTerminal program, select the "Terminal keys"
option for the "Function, arrow, and ctrl keys act as" parameter.
If you want to operate the console using a different configuration, ensure you
change the settings on both the terminal and on the switch. Change the switch
settings first, then change the terminal settings, and re-establish the console
session.
