Maintenance, Service, and Repair

FRONT END ALIGNMENT

There are no front end alignment adjustments.
For a vehicle that pulls to one side, inspect the following
items:
A vehicle that pulls to the left or right could be a result of
but not limited to:
Broken or fatigued fork spring.
Bent fork.
Bent frame.
Dragging rear brake.
Seized rear wheel bearing.
INSPECT THE STEERING
GEAR
Do not drive the vehicle while the steering
wheel or front wheels are tied in position.
Driving the vehicle while the steering
wheel or front wheels tied in position may
cause loss of control of the vehicle resulting
in severe bodily injury and/or property
damage.
Tie the front fork so that it cannot rotate.
Rotate the steering wheel back and forth to measure the
play.
Steering wheel play should be 0-1/2" (max).
If the steering wheel play is excessive, then refer to
section Steering Gear Column and Assembly and
inspect the following:
Universal joint splines.
Universal joint set screws.
Steering wheel splines.
Gear lash in the steering gear.
Missing or damaged woodruff key (fork spindle).
Damaged fork spindle (woodruff key slot).
Counter gear bushings.

FORK BEARINGS

Inspection

1. Make sure the key-switch is in the "OFF"
position, then remove the key.
2. Place the forward-reverse switch in the
center "OFF" position.
3. Confirm the electric park brake is applied.
4. Place blocks under the rear wheels to
prevent vehicle movement.
5. Disconnect the main positive and negative
cables at the batteries.
Always use a lifting strap, hoist, and jack
stands, of adequate capacity to lift and
support the vehicle. Failure to use lifting
and support devices of rated load capacity
may result in severe bodily injury.
6. Raise the front of the vehicle and support with
jack stands.
7. Inspect for lateral play by attempting to move the
fork to the left and right (not rotating), There should
be no noticeable play.
8. If there is any play in the fork bearings, refer to
Replace the Front Fork
section
regarding adjusting the fork bearings.
9. Lower the front end to the ground.
10. Reconnect the main positive and negative cables
at the batteries.
11. Remove the blocks from behind the wheels.
12. Test drive the vehicle.
