DIAGNOSTICS

CHARGING CIRCUIT DIAGNOSIS

Test Conditions:
• Brake engaged, blade drive lever disengaged
• Engine connector disconnected
• Ignition switch in run position
NOTE: Be sure to set multimeter to read AC or DC voltage or amperage as test requires:
Test/Check Point
1. Engine connector 451 Yel/Blk
wire
2. Engine connector 220 Red/Blk
wire
3. Headlamps
4. Headlamp connector 451 Yel/
Wht connector at engine cover
Test Conditions:
• Meter negative (—) lead grounded to engine frame
• Meter positive (+) lead on numbered test point
Test/Check Point
5. Engine connector wires:
Red Wire
Black wire
Test Conditions:
• Reconnect engine connector
Test/Check Point
6. Plug in fuse
7. Red wire at ignition switch
8. Battery positive terminal

• Engine running at fast idle (3600 rpm)
• Meter negative (–) lead on battery negative (–) terminal
• Meter positive (+) lead on numbered test point
Normal
Unregulated voltage 14 VAC
2–4 Amps DC
Remain on with engine running
11.8-13.2 DC voltage
Check headlamp bulbs
Normal
Infinite resistance from wire to ground
Infinite resistance from wire to wire
• Start engine
11.8-13.2 DC volts (both sides of fuse)
11.8-13.2 DC volts
11.8-13.2 DC volts
ELECTRICAL
If Not Normal

Go to step 4

• Stop engine
• Disconnect engine connector
If Not Normal
Check stator for short to ground
Check stator for internal short
See Briggs & Stratton manual
• Multimeter negative to ground
Check 220 Red/Blk circuit
Check 220 Red circuit
Check 201 Red Battery Positive
lead and terminal connector
